REVIEW/ CLARE FAZACKERLEY

ART : 05:07:2010 - 15:08:2010

Clare graduated with an honours degree in fine art from De Montfort University, and has recently moved to live and work in London. These new surroundings are inspiring her latest creations.

She produces richly evocative images that seem to capture a moment and an experience, choosing subjects with familiar, almost iconic silhouette and skyline, and capturing them at the moment when light falls and details recede. The image remains, recognised yet distant like a memory; details are suggested, encouraging the imagination and in doing so retaining a freshness and appeal.

Travel inspires her work, particularly the first impressions, the excitement of discovery, and the moment when great, complex city life turns abstract; when skies add drama, sunshine dissolves detail, but the physical still asserts. The advent of dusk, where electric and neon lights start to add vitality to the streets and buildings, add yet more richness and colour to the scene, implying movement and energy.

She paints in careful layers, building texture with rich colours that give the work a presence on many levels; the composition, the image, and the surfaces that change with the light of the room.

REVIEW/ YVONNE ES - PRIVATE VIEW

ART : 24:05:2010 - 04:07:2010

Aubin & Wills were proud to host the launch of the private exhibition view of their latest artist, Yvonne Es, in the Westbourne Grove store. We were privileged to catch Yvonne Es as the terribly busy artist divides her time between Paris, London and New York thanks to her successful modelling career. She has now turned her incredibly talented hand to art and after unveiling an installation for fashion house Cerruti in their Paris store she popped to London to treat the Aubin walls with her fantastic exhibition ‘Controlled Chaos’.

And what a night it was! The music was supplied by the duo of Keithhaus fame who had been enticed into leaving Maida Vegas and their regular night ‘Slack Sabbath’ to play an upbeat set of nu disco, funk and leftfield hip-hop. The decks rested on the till and the store converted itself into a great dance floor as guests enjoyed magicians, art and fine wine. The night was described by one guest as a ‘creative hub for exciting interesting folk’ a perfect backdrop to an exhibition showcasing an expression of feeling.

It is definitely worth a venture to the ever fashionable Westbourne Grove to view this expressive and emotive collection. The exhibition will be showing until 4th July.

YVONNE ES

ART : 24:05:2010 - 04:07:2010

Yvonne Es

For this exhibition Yvonne has created new pieces inspired by her view of the world today.

Though not a direct inspiration, the fashion world has provided an opportunity to observe and be driven by the passion of creative geniuses she has worked with, which include Karl Lagerfeld, Tim Walker, Rei Kawakubo for Commes des Garcon, and Vivienne Westwood among others.

Yvonne has been selling her art on a commission basis to people in the music industry for some years and recently made a large installation for fashion house Cerruti in their Paris store as part of their renovation party in July 2009.

“As I see it, having your work admired by other people is one of the biggest achievements one can have.”

STEVE WILSON

ILLUSTRATION : 08:03:10 - 11:04:10

Steve Wilson

Taking the spirit of 1980s New York, combining it with rock imagery from the 70's, and squeezing it through a brain full of circuses and tribal body art, Steve Wilson is a singular talent. His techniques are as eclectic as his influences, harnessing the spontaneity of pen, pencil and collage, with the endless possibilities of Photoshop and Illustrator.

Noma Bar

Born in Israel 1973, Noma discovered his flair for blending caricature and pictograms during the Gulf War, sketching Saddam Hussein around a radioactive symbol. He has been based in London since 2001, working for clients worldwide and building a portfolio that now includes over 60 magazine covers, and a series of pieces commissioned for the 2009 BAFTA Awards.

‘Guess Who - the many faces of Noma Bar’ and ‘Negative Space’, are both published by MBP & Thames and Hudson.

REVIEW/ Quentin Jones

Art : 21:09:09 - 01:11:09

As anticipated, the Quentin Jones exhibition was a highly successful evening. Recent graduate Jones attracted a large crowd who flocked in veritable droves to see the best of this new artist, displayed on the walls above the rows of dark shelves which house the neatly-stacked garments.

The crowd was young and fresh, and so it should have been- earlier this year the artist who is also a model and a recent graduate made the video for the new ready-to-wear label from Patrick Grant, E. Tautz which was called “charming, almost Pythonesque” by Esquire Magazine.

The atmosphere in the Westbourne Grove store was one of excitement as everyone around admired Jones’ work, celebrating this new talent. For onlookers it was interesting to see a different crowd in the shop complimenting the work and the garments displayed. The paintings were bold with intense bright colours which lightened the mood; their crafting was beautiful, and the texture was one that created tangible depth.

All in all a very successful exhibition for this emerging talent onto the UK art scene; her distinctive style and bold ways along with her own beauty and her interest in female imagery will mean that she should have no shortage of young, beautiful art-loving followers.

Quentin Jones

Art : 21:09:09 - 01:11:09

London based Quentin Jones works as a painter/ illustrator/animator. Her pieces reflect an interest in female imagery; from the glamourised form, to the unsightly flesh. Having just graduated this summer from Central Saint Martins, her MA sought to question aspects of visual consumption; its intrusive nature, and the rituals and disguise that prepare us to be looked at.

The subjects in her paintings often hide behind collaged layers of masks or costume, or stand exposing themselves knowingly. This focus is at times a reaction to aspects of the fashion industry, which she has worked in for the past 5 years as a model.
